How to Bet on Sports in Wisconsin

Sports betting in Wisconsin is legal; but it's retail-only until the statewide online platform launches under 2025 Wisconsin Act 247. Here's exactly how to make your first legal wager today.

Step 1; Pick a Sportsbook

You have three operators today:

Pick whichever is closest. Lines and menus are similar across all three.

Step 2; Bring What You Need

  • Government-issued photo ID; driver's license, passport, or state ID. You must be 21+.
  • Cash; most kiosks are cash-only. Bring more than you plan to bet for buffer.
  • Player's card (optional); sign up for free at the casino's player desk. Earns comps and lets you cash tickets to your account.

Step 3; Walk Up to the Counter or Kiosk

You have two ways to place a bet inside the casino:

  • Staffed counter; tell the cashier your bet ("$50 on the Packers minus 7"). They print a ticket. Counter is best for first-timers and complex multi-leg bets.
  • Self-service kiosk; touchscreen, accepts cash, prints a ticket. Faster once you know the interface.

Step 4; Place the Bet

You'll need to specify four things:

  1. Sport and game; e.g. NFL, Packers vs. Bears, Sunday 12pm
  2. Market; moneyline, spread, total, parlay, prop
  3. Side; which team or which side of the line
  4. Stake; how much you're risking

The kiosk or cashier will confirm the price and show your potential payout. Verify and confirm.

Step 5; Keep the Ticket

Your printed ticket is the wager. Don't lose it. Most operators have a 12-month redemption window for winning tickets.

After the game, return to the counter or kiosk to cash out. Winnings under a few hundred dollars are usually paid out instantly in cash. Larger wins may require a W-2G tax form.

What to Bet First

If it's your first wager, keep it simple:

  • Moneyline; pick the winner, no spread to track. Read more.
  • Point spread; the standard NFL/NBA market. Read more.
  • Total; over/under on combined points. Read more.

Avoid long parlays and exotic props until you've placed a few straight bets and you're comfortable with the interface.

Responsible Gambling

Decide on a bankroll before you walk in. Treat it as money you're willing to lose. Don't chase losses. If you or someone you know needs help: 1-800-GAMBLER or the Wisconsin helpline 1-800-426-2535.
