College Sports Betting in Wisconsin
College sports betting in Wisconsin comes with one major asterisk: you cannot bet on in-state college teams. The restriction applies to every Wisconsin tribal sportsbook and is expected to carry over to the upcoming online launch under 2025 Wisconsin Act 247.
What’s Restricted
You cannot wager on any team representing a college or university located in Wisconsin. That includes:
- Wisconsin Badgers; football, men’s basketball, hockey, and every other varsity sport
- Marquette Golden Eagles; Big East men’s basketball, women’s basketball, soccer, etc.
- UW–Milwaukee Panthers, UW–Green Bay Phoenix, and other Division I and Division II in-state programs
- Tournaments hosted in Wisconsin where the betting market is on a Wisconsin team
What’s Allowed
- Out-of-state college football; Big Ten games not involving Wisconsin, SEC, ACC, Big 12, etc.
- Out-of-state college basketball; full March Madness slate (with the WI-team carve-out)
- Bowl games and the College Football Playoff; except games involving Wisconsin
Why the Restriction Exists
Many states with newly legalized sports betting include in-state college restrictions, citing athlete protection and integrity concerns. Wisconsin’s framework reflects that pattern. The restriction is written into the tribal compact provisions and is enforced at the betting counter and (in the future) at the app level via team filtering.
March Madness Workaround
Wisconsin bettors can still bet most NCAA tournament games. When a Wisconsin team is in the bracket, that specific game line is removed but every other matchup remains. Futures markets (national champion, Final Four) typically remain available even if a Wisconsin team is included; confirm with the sportsbook on the day.
