Handicap
An adjustment added to a contest to level the matchup. The point spread is the most common form.
A handicap is any adjustment that makes a lopsided matchup bettable on both sides. In US sports betting it most often refers to the point spread.
Other handicap forms:
- Run line in MLB; always ±1.5 runs
- Puck line in NHL; always ±1.5 goals
- Asian handicap in soccer; fractional or whole goals (-0.5, -1.0, -1.5)
- Alternate lines; adjusted spreads at different juice
The handicap shifts where the money flows so the book can balance action and earn the vig regardless of outcome.
