Hold

The percentage of total handle a sportsbook keeps as revenue. Usually 5–8% on standard markets.

Hold is the sportsbook’s revenue divided by total handle (volume wagered). Sometimes called “win percentage” or “win rate” on the operator side.

Typical hold rates:

  • NFL/NBA spreads: 4–5%
  • MLB moneyline: 3–4%
  • Parlays: 25–30%
  • Player props: 8–12%
  • Futures: 15–25%

The structural reason books prefer balanced action is that a balanced book earns the full vig as hold. If one side wins big and the other loses big, hold compresses.

Bettors should think of hold as the headwind they’re betting into. Lower-hold markets (NFL spreads, MLB moneyline) are friendlier than parlays and props.
