Fade
To bet against. "Fading the public" means betting the opposite of where the majority of money is going.
To fade a side is to bet against it. The term comes up most often in “fade the public”; a contrarian strategy that assumes the betting public is wrong more often than it’s right on big-event games.
Common contexts:
- “I’m fading the Cowboys this week” → betting against them
- “Fade the public” → betting the unpopular side
- “Fading a hot streak” → betting against someone on a winning run
Fading the public isn’t always +EV. The public is often correct on chalk favorites. The edge exists in spots where 80%+ of bets are on one side but the line hasn’t moved much; that’s where the sharps are quietly on the other side.
